SAVERY Philadelphia presents:

CONES LOOK LIKE COWLED MONKS, opening March 6th, is an exhibition in the form of a creative dialogue between artists Jessica Hans and Miranda Pfeiffer.

'Cones Look Like Cowled Monks' is an ongoing collaboration between Miranda Pfeiffer and Jessica Hans, inspired by the natural forms of Pasha Baja in Turkey, which are said to look like cowled monks. This collection of graphite drawings, textiles, hand drawn animation and ceramics describe organic forms explored through excavation and touch.

Each of Pfeiffer’s realistic graphite renderings depict objects unearthed from soil. These drawings, textures, and animations display crumpled trash, twists of wood, and splashes of crystalline water. The rendered surfaces are palpable and crisp, only obscured by natural elements like water, wear, and light. In contrast to Pfeiffer's precise drawings Hans’ work occurs like thick viscous shadows. Her ceramics--as clay, rock, grog, and glaze--literally emerge from the earth. Hans’ work is a mirage of stone; her quasi-functional forms embody volcanic necks and geological oddities, harkening to the strange landscapes of Cappadocia. Similar to land masses, Hans’ sculpture begins to take on representational form when seen through human eyes.

In this body of work, the viewer is carried through Pfeiffer’s crisp depictions of specific earth-objects, which then shift into visceral, even gooey configurations by Hans’. Throughout, there is an exploration of materials and organic forms. The experience is like wandering through a forest just before engulfing night, where--in a haze of grey--marks on a tree trunk could be either human hieroglyph or weathered wood.
